Sydney has a blog

Shortly after we got back from Hawaii, Sydney decided she wanted to start blogging. I told her I could easily set-up another WordPress instance for her to use, but she decided she wanted to use Moveable Type as ‘it’s a blog graphic designers use’ - I decided not to fight that battle. Instead, I spent a couple of hours learning how to install Moveable Type and helped her get it set-up. Sydney then spent many many hours customizing her new blog in order to make it look like her existing web page. It was challenging for her, but eventually she finished and then proceeded to do nothing with her blog - until now.

Anyway, I digress, almost two months later, she has written her first entry sharing a couple of funny Maia stories. Check it out at and continue to watch http://sydneyshimko.org/blog - hopefully this isn’t her last entry…

Merry Christmas

I had all of the intentions of taking the time to sit down and write a Christmas letter as a ‘year in review,’ but needless to say I never made the time to do it. Maybe I can do it before the New Year?!?

Despite the brevity of this post, I do want to take a moment to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.   If your holiday was anything like ours it was busy and focused more on the many different events to cram into the weekend instead of reflection on the birth of our Lord and the many gifts we have been blessed with.   This year my many blessings have been made apparent to me through Maia’s daily excitement.   My prayer for each one of us is that we too may look at the littlest of things and giggle with joy.

Merry Christmas to all and thank you Lord for my family.

Sponsor a Child for Christmas

I don’t often get on this soapbox, but I should. Since I was a sophomore in college I have sponsored a child through Compassion International. This started as something that I and several other people in my dorm at Concordia University did, but after the first year people moved away but I felt obligated to keep it up. Since then it has been the most effective money I’ve ever spent.

For the last ten year’s I’ve paid about $30/month to fund, food, health and education for a child in Guatemala. Out of this I get letters from Kevin several times a year where we discuss playing in the snow, bikes, footbal (soccer), our favorite animals, and our families. I’d be lying if I said he was a constant thought in our family or if we sacrificed anything in to provide Kevin this sponsorship, but it has become a necessary expense.

Please consider sponsoring a child this Christmas - it will give more per dollar than any other gift I can think of. You can look at Compassion’s website to learn about their methodology, their fiscal information, and finally how to sponsor a child.

A group of students from Oklahoma State University sent a Pentax DSLR to 104,000 ft via a sounding balloon and took pictures along the way. This pic is from the peak of the flight - look at their entire project’s pictures - it’s amazing.

Not yet

By the way, since everyone is waiting with baited breath,
No we don’t have a new baby yet, and yes we’ll make sure to let everyone know when we do.

Texas to Tel Aviv

The below article from the New Yort Times was posted on JimBurkee.com (running for 5th District of the US House) this evening and all I can say in response is ‘Hell yeah.’
I agree with everything written in this article.  There is no debate about global warming but as there is a realization that our problem [...]
