Some of you techy people may have heard about Microsoft’s attempt to buy Yahoo!, to me this is a sad state of affairs. Microsoft of course is a stagnate behemoth that only looks out for the benefit of executives and shareholders. Microsoft has a history of using it’s size and power to influence standards in ways that benefit itself and hurt the general public. Google and Yahoo! on the otherhand have a history of doing things for the greater good and enhance the competitive atmosphere of the internet.
Recently Google negatively responded to Microsoft’s offer and also offered to assist Yahoo! avoid Microsoft’s take over. In my mind a Google - Yahoo! partnership or Google buying Yahoo! is the best option for the general public.

Just two days ago I wrote about how Yahoo was being put through the ringer in Congress for following the law… (if you aren’t familiar with that situation, you should go there and educate yourself first.)
Today I read that Google India just did the same thing - that is they followed the local law. In doing so, a man ended up getting arrested and put in jail. (Google gave the IP address of a user to the government and then the the ISP gave the government the user’s physical address. Unfortunately it was the wrong information - but that is a different point.) Now, will this man and/or his family open a US lawsuit against Google and be paraded around in Congress as victims to the Google execs?
Only time will tell, but my guess is no.
My point of the other day still stands - operating in other companies requires businesses to follow the law of the local country. Sometimes following that law sucks, so you work to change it instead of defying it. Defiance will not change people nor situations - it’ll just get your business kicked out of that country.

Check out this article - Google wants to sell mapping (and ads in the form of coupons) to
gas stations. While being able to look-up and print directions to nearby locations is a great idea, the limitations around not having a keyboard will most likely keep this as a great idea instead of something that we’ll see. As GPS modules in vehicles become more common, less expensive and easier to use who’ll need directions anyway?

104,000ft, originally uploaded by arena_5.
A group of students from Oklahoma State University sent a Pentax DSLR to 104,000 ft via a sounding balloon and took pictures along the way. This pic is from the peak of the flight - look at their entire project’s pictures - it’s amazing.
By the way, since everyone is waiting with baited breath,
No we don’t have a new baby yet, and yes we’ll make sure to let everyone know when we do.
The below article from the New Yort Times was posted on JimBurkee.com (running for 5th District of the US House) this evening and all I can say in response is ‘Hell yeah.’
